Position: Lead Food Service/Nutrition Assistant

Location: Math and Science Academy

Hours: 8:45am - 2:15pm (5.5 hours/day), Monday-Friday, on applicable school days.  Position is eligible for 10 days paid time off.

Wage Information: $20.50 per hour

Position Summary

The Lead Food Service/Nutrition Assistant is responsible for performing all standard cashier and food service duties, while also ensuring accountability of money, record keeping, and program compliance requirements. This position oversees the work of Food Service/Nutrition Assistants within the assigned school, helps monitor sanitation and equipment documentation, and supports proper hygiene practices among staff. Duties may expand to include other operational needs as they arise.

Primary Job Functions

• Perform all duties of a Food Service/Nutrition Assistant, including POS operation, account management, meal tracking, food preparation and service, and sanitation support, which include but are not limited to:

1. Accurately operate the school's computerized POS cash register system to process student breakfast and lunch transactions.

2. Process student meal payments, add funds to student accounts, and reconcile the cash drawer at the end of each shift.

3. Ensure all meals claimed by students meet state and federal reimbursement requirements.

4. Assist with general food preparation, setting up serving lines, and serving appropriate food portions.

5. Assist in cleaning cafeteria tables, washing kitchen equipment and utensils, and storing supplies.

6. Maintain a clean, safe, and sanitary work environment in accordance with food safety standards.

7. Provide quality, positive customer service to students, staff, and the community.

• Oversee the daily work of Food Service/Nutrition Assistants within the assigned school to ensure consistent, high-quality service.

• Monitor and maintain required sanitation documentation and equipment/machine maintenance logs.

• Help ensure Food Service/Nutrition Assistants and vendor food service staff maintain proper hygiene practices, including handwashing and clean attire.

• Support cash accountability, record keeping, and program compliance requirements across the team.

• Take on additional operational duties as assigned, which may evolve based on the needs of the Nutrition Services program.

Physical Job Requirements

Physical requirements associated with the position can be best summarized as follows:

Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer and Point of Service (POS) devices, and reach with hands and arms; must routinely lift and/or carry up to 40-50 pounds and stand for extended periods. Duties are performed in a typical school food service setting, with minimal environmental hazards and risks associated with the nature of the work.

Job Specifications (Education, License, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

Required:

• High school diploma or equivalent education.

• Able to read and write in English.

• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

• Attend and complete 6 hours of annual training related to food safety, sanitation, and POS operations.

• Ability to work independently.

• Strong math skills and basic computer/POS literacy.

• Ability to lift/carry up to 40-50 pounds and stand for extended periods.

• Ability to pass a criminal background check.

• Ability to lead and support a team of cashiers/food service staff.

• Knowledge of sanitation and equipment/machine maintenance documentation practices.

Desired:

• Previous cashiering, money-handling, or customer service experience, ideally in a school or institutional food service setting.

• Knowledge of food production, serving, and clean-up procedures.

• Attend the Back-to-School Workshop/Training and applicable staff meetings each school year.
