Eggs & Issues is a series of forums that provides Chamber Members an excellent opportunity to hear from community stakeholders about the issues affecting the area. Each event in the series is highlighted by a guest speaker and allows plenty of time for questions and answers.

This month is a presentation on the MN Board of Firefighter Training and Education (MBFTE) a state agency established to review training needs, establish standards and qualifications, and develop procedures for the oversight of fire service education and licensing of firefighters in the State of Minnesota.  


Guest presenter Bruce West, Minnesota State Fire Marshal, will speak on an interesting, public safety topic you won't want to miss.

• How is fire service funded in the State of MN?

A 35-year Minnesota fire service veteran, West started his career as a paid, on-call firefighter with the Anoka-Champlin Fire Department.  He was a full-time firefighter for Anoka-Champlin before being appointed Elk River fire chief in October 1994, a position he held for 15 years.

West was most recently the executive director of the Minnesota Board of Firefighter Training and Education. Prior to that position, West worked at DPS' Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM) division as the training/liaison manager for the Minnesota Joint Analysis Center and as HSEM's statewide fire liaison. West served on the Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association Board of Directors and was its president in 2006-07.

This month's topic will be Employment Law Presented by Don Wodek

Attorney Don Wodek's presentation will focus on employment laws and the impact on the workplace, including the Family Medical Leave Act, Workers Compensation and OSHA.   Wodek will also review employment law practices and trends, anti-discrimination laws, the statutory framework, major court cases and address how the law of contract and tort apply to employment situations.
 
Wodek is a Human Resources/Labor Relations Manager and Employment Law Attorney with the Minneapolis Veteran Health Care System. He has worked in private practice, business and government as an expert in employment law. He served as the Deputy Commissioner and State Negotiation Labor Relations Manager for the State of Minnesota at the Department of Employee Relations. Don received his J.D., from William Mitchell College of Law, St. Paul.  He has a M.A. from Northern Michigan University, Marquette, in Biology/Environmental Sciences and a B.S. in Biology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
