Lunch & Learn - Understanding Mental ...
Description
“Understanding Mental Illness and those Affected by it in the Workplace”
PRESENTED BY: Mike Huntley, Program Director, Youth Service Bureau
Did you know that 1 in 5 people will have some kind of mental illness in their lifetime? That’s more common than being left-handed! Thus, it’s highly likely that you have a co-worker or employee who has been diagnosed with or is in recovery from a mental illness. But unlike other medical conditions, it can be difficult to know what to say or do. In this session, learn more about common mental illnesses, what mental illness stigma looks like in the workplace, and how to talk about mental illness with co-workers and employees. Get answers to questions like, “What should I say when a co-worker says they have a mental illness?” or “A colleague says they have anxiety. Doesn’t that just mean they’re stressed out?” and “What can I do if an employee tells me they’re depressed?” Youth Service Bureau staff will offer practical tips and suggestions for better understanding this important topic in hopes of reducing the stigma of mental illness in the workplace.
