Description
The Woodbury Chamber Business Networking Luncheon offers a chance to network and learn more about an interesting topic each month while enjoying a delicious catered lunch.
This month is a School Supply Drive. Education is important to our community, but not all kids have the items they need to succeed this school year. You can change that by donating supplies such as backpacks, binders, notebooks, crayons and pencils. Please bring your items to the luncheon and the Woodbury YMCA will collect these items and distribute them.
This month's topic: Learn how Minnesota Public Schools are Financed
Minnesota school districts are gearing up for “back to school” and that often includes referendums in the fall. Attend this presentation to find out how school districts are financed and how those calculations impact your business or your family. The chamber has invited the state’s expert to provide an overview of how Minnesota’s public schools are financed and to be available to answer any questions attendees may have about school funding. The presentation will also explain the context for school finance, describe the major components of the school finance system, review recent trends, and summarize the school finance legislation enacted in 2015.
Presenter: Tom Melcher is the Director of the School Finance Division at the Minnesota Department of Education. The Division provides support to state policy-makers; determines state aid entitlements and property tax levy limitations for local education agencies; maintains the state’s financial and student accounting and reporting systems for local education agencies; administers state responsibilities relating to school facilities, pupil transportation, and school district organization; audits student and financial data reported by local education agencies, and provides financial management assistance to local education agencies. Tom has 36 years of experience in the School Finance Division at the Department. Before joining the Department, he was an assistant business manager with the Collier County, Florida Public Schools. Tom holds a Ph.D. in Educational Administration from the University of Florida.
